Odin, Eye of

Myth ~ ANCIENT NORSE ~ (Title: Alfadir, All-father) Also called Woden, Wodan, Wotan, and Othinn; Odin is the son of Bor (A supernatural man) and Bestla (An ancient frost giantess). He is the brother of Vé (Gave humans speech and external senses) and Vili (Gave humans emotion and intelligence). He is the main God of the Aesir and of the entire pantheon. He is the father of Thor by Jord, who is the female personification of the primordial, uncultivated earth. With Frigg, his wife he is the father of Balder (the god of innocence, beauty, joy, purity, and peace). Odin is the God of Death, Poetry, War, and Wisdom. He was also the creator of the runic alphabet . His hall is called Valaskjalf (translation: "Shelf of the Slain") and is located in the Asgard. He also presides over Valhalla. The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ The people of K’tau call their sun the Eye of Odin. They believe that Freyr will save them from Ragnarok when the sun’s normal light spectrum shifts to the red spectrum because the wormhole traveled through the sun and carried a super-heavy element, in this case, plutonium into it (505 – Red Sky).

Vroom, vroom, vroom! Teal’c and the Time Bubble

Odyssey

Myth ~ ANCIENT GREECE ~ The Odyssey was written by Homer c. 800-600 BC and details the journey and adventures of Odysseus (Latin: Ulysses; King of Ithaca). In The Odyssey, Odysseus was a suitor of Helen of Troy. After she is kidnapped, Menelaus (her husband) asks the former suitors for help. Odysseus goes to Troy for ten years, and then The Odyssey started. The epic poem details his ten year journey back to Ithaca. After he and his men left Troy, they met the Lotus-eaters. Then they met the Cyclopes, where Odysseus blinds Polyphemus, Poseidon’s son. Then after meeting the King of the Winds, they wind up on Circe's island, where they are turned into pigs. With the help of Hermes (Messenger of the Gods), they escape and visit the Land of the Dead. Then they evade Scylla ("Puppy;" sea monster) and Charybdis (whirlpool sea monster). They then arrive on the Island of the Sun Cattle. The men disobey orders and kill the cows, thus their ship is destroyed. Odysseus is the only one to survive and for seven of the ten years, he was held captive by Calypso, the beautiful nymph daughter of Atlas. With the aid of Hermes, Odysseus escapes. He builds a raft and sails for seventeen days. However, Poseidon destroys his raft in revenge for blinding his son. Odysseus make it home and disguised as a beggar returns to the castle. With the help of his son, Telemachus, he vanquishes Penelope’s (his wife) foul suitors. Learn More: The Internet Classics Archive | The Odyssey by Homer.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ Commanded by Colonel Paul Emerson, it is also known as the Deep Space Carrier PB3865. It is a second-generation human/alien-hybrid spacecraft capable of interstellar travel, similar to the Daedalus (913 -- Ripple Effect). After the Prometheus was destroyed by an Ori satellite weapon in orbit around Caledonia; the Odyssey became Earth's primary vessel (See Ethon) (915 -- Ethon). The Odyssey and the Russian Korolev, along with other allies, fight the Ori at their new supergate (920 -- Camelot). The Asgard install their Repository of Knowledge and technology in the ship. Once the new Asgard core is integrated into every system, the Ori find them. Carter thinks that the Ori can detect the Asgard technology. The Ori try to destroy the ship, but Carter activates a time dilation bubble. After spending 50 years in the bubble trying to find a way to escape the Ori blast, Carter enables the ship to absorb the Ori blast to repower the ZPM. They go back in time to moment the shot is fired, where Teal'c executes the escape plan, and the undamaged Odyssey jumps into hyperspace (1020 – Unending).

Olokun

Olokun

Myth ~ AFRICA (Yoruba) ~ He is the Yoruba God of the Sea and Wealth. (The Yoruba mostly live in the southwestern section of Nigeria and some of Benin and the northern part of Togo. The Oyo Empire was the largest Yoruba kingdom in the 17th century.) In some stories, he is depicted as a female, however, I attended a lecture given by a native Nigerian professor and he said that Olokun is a male deity. Olokun is married to Olorun and is the father of Odudua (Deity of the South) and Obatala (the creator of the human body, patron of the handicapped, and Deity of the North). He was killed by Baal’s forces in the War of the System Lords (813 – It’s Good To Be King).

Oma Desala Om, picture from Britannica.com, Click to go there Touched by an Ancient

Oma Desala

Religion ~ INDIA ~ Originally "Aum," (in Sanskrit, the vowels "a" and "u" blend to become "o") Om is a Sanskrit term that means, "assent." It is used in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jaina, and other principal religions of India. The three sounds a, u, and m represent several important triads. The first is the three worlds: earth, atmosphere, and heaven. The second is the three major Hindu gods, Brahma, Shiva, and Vishnu. The last is the three sacred Vedic scriptures: Rg, Yajur, and Sama. Thus, it embodies the essence of the entire universe. Go here for more information: Om Mani Padme Hum: The Meaning of the Mantra in Tibetan Buddhism. Thanks to Emilie Heidel, who informs me that Oma means Granny (Grandmother) in German and Dutch.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ Since this episode has Buddhist undertones, I thought that Oma might have originated from the "Om" syllable. Daniel says of Monk: "Whatever theology he follows may be an original basis for Buddhism on Earth." Oma Desala is a benevolent alien that resided on the planet Kheb, where she protected the Harsiesis child. Monk also tells Daniel that Oma Desala is "Mother Nature." Daniel also says that "Desala" is an African word for "nature," but I haven’t been able to find any proof of that yet (320 – Maternal Instinct). Orlin is another of this race of aliens, referred to as the "Others." He was banished for giving a weapon to the people of Velona (P4X-636) to defend themselves against the Goa’uld about 400 years ago. The Velonans then used the weapon to conquer other races. We also learned that Oma Desala was banished, but for another reason (503 – Ascension). She helps Daniel ascend after he was poisoned by Naquadria on Kelowna, ala John Cusack in Fat Man and the Little Boy (521 – Meridian). Daniel reveals that the "Others" (also known as the "Ascended") are the Ancients; the builders of the Stargate system. A tablet found in Ra’s secret treasure chamber on Abydos reveals that they also have a very important lost city (622 – Full Circle). She tells Daniel that he has the Ancients’ knowledge of how to destroy the Replicators (816/817 – Reckoning).

Daniel getting his brain probed

Omoroca

Myth ~ ANCIENT MESOPOTAMIA (City of: Babylon) ~ Omoroca is another name for the Goddess Tiamat, who was the Serpent Goddess of Chaos. It originated with the Sumerian name "UM-URUK" (translation: "mother of Uruk"). Through the years, it slowly changed to Omoroca. She is first mentioned in the creation myth of the Babylonian epic poem called Enuma Elish, which is derived from the opening words (translation: "When Skies Above"). In the beginning of the story, only Apsu (her husband) and she exist. They are the parents of all the gods. Apsu decides that their children have become so misbehaved, that he plans to kill them. Ea (see Oannes) learns of Apsu’s plan and kills him. Omoroca builds an army to avenge her husband’s death. Marduk (also called Belos, Baal), Ea’s son, leads Ea’s army in the battle. Omoroca is killed in the battle and Marduk stretched out her skin to make the heavens.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ Nem, her husband, is searching for information on what happened to her. After agreeing to help and having his brain zapped by Nem’s device, Daniel remembers, and tells him that "The god Belos came down onto Babylon unto the place of Omoroca and cut the woman asunder" (112 – Fire and Water).

The Oran

Oran

Geography ~ AFRICA ~ Located on the Gulf of Oran (An inlet of the Mediterranean Sea), it is in northwest Algeria and the country’s 2nd largest city. West-southwest of Algiers, the site has been occupied since prehistoric times. In 1509, the Spanish captured it and the Turks captured it in 1708. In 1831, the French occupied it and later Vichy France held it during World War II. It was liberated by the Allied troops in November 1942. Learn More: Encyclopaedia of the Orient: Oran.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ This is the ship belonging to the Hebridan Golon Jarlath. During the 59th Loop of Kon Garat, he chose to do without emergency reserves and instead added extra weapons to his ship. It is learned that Muirios, another competitor, sabotaged many of the ships. Consequently, the Oran had to drop out of the race. Once rescued by Carter and Warrick aboard the Seberus, Jarlath transmits a jamming signal to Muirios’ ship thus preventing him from wining (708 – Space Race).

The Doci speaks for the Ori Priors are the Ori’s servants and spread the word Adria, the Orici

Ori

Myth ~ AFRICA (Nigeria) ~ (Translation: "head/mind") The Yoruba believe that the events in one’s life are chosen by the individual before they are born. Their God, Ori, supervises these choices of predestination. Ori could be considered a sort of guardian angel, for both mortals and the other Gods. Daily divination with sacred palm-nuts tells what Ori wishes one to do. The belief in Ori is a way of trying to confirm that human existence has meaning, a mission, and a message. They believe that one’s physical head represents an inner head, which contains one’s destiny. If one is rich then they have chosen wisely. If they are poor, a better life is coming, and they must be patient. ~ Ori is also: A Dwarf in Norse Mythology, a term for the origin of replication signal for DNA replication, a Hebrew boy's name meaning "My Light," and the Korean word for duck. ~ However, in all probability, the name for this race was probably chosen because it is part of the word Origin.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ Daniel and Vala meet an Ori Prior and are taken to Plains of Celestis to meet the Ori. Once the same as the Alterans (the Ancients), the turned to religion while the Ancients turned to science. The Ori believe they created of human life. Since they are Ascended, they believe they deserve worship. Because the Ancients don’t believe in this, they must be destroyed; the same as all nonbelievers. With the Origin faith, the Ori offer promises of enlightenment, however this is a pretense. The Ori draw energy from the believers and allows them to thrive (902 -- Avalon). The Ori learn of the Milky Way Galaxy (903 -- Origin). The Ori may have caused the virus that killed the Ancients that lived in Antarctica (See Aiyana) (905 -- The Powers That Be). The Ori seize the planet Kallana and transforming it into an artificial singularity in an attempt to enter the Milky Way (906 -- Beachhead). The Ori draw their power from the worship of humans. Orlin (See Velona) returns to earth to cure the Prior plague. He also reveals that they wish to destroy the Ancients (910/911 -- The Fourth Horseman). The Ori created the "Orici," an unascended being with the powers of the Ori in order to cheat the laws of ascension and lead their troops into the Milky Way Galaxy. Vala Mal Doran gives birth to her and names her Adria. The Orici was genetically engineered to reach full maturity in a few days (1001 -- Flesh and Blood). Baal implants one of his clones into Adria. SG-1 contacts the Tok-ra, who will remove Baal’s symbiote and implant a Tok-ra. As Baal’s clone is being removed, a lethal toxin is released into Adria's body. Right before she dies, Adria figures out how to Ascend (See Ancients) (1019 – Dominion).

The Valhalla over Orilla Goodbye

Orilla

Geography ~ CANADA ~ (Spanish orilla, "shore (of a lake or river)") Possibly named for Orillia. Located in Simcoe County, Ontario, it was founded in 1867. The city is about 84 miles north of Toronto and is located on the shores of Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching. The site was inhabited by the Huron and Iroquois Indians who trapped fish there over 4000 years ago. Archaeologists have also found the remains so several other fishing, hunting, and trading sites. The area was also visited by the French explorers Samuel d’Champlain and René-Robert de La Salle, as well as Martin Frobisher an English explorer/privateer/pirate. Orillia was the first city to have "daylight saving time" in North America. It was one of the first to have streetlights in the 1930’s, and printed its own money in 1936. It also was the first city in North America to have hydroelectric power. Learn More: The City of Orillia and Scenic Orillia.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ After the War with the Replicators ended, the Asgard abandoned Othala and decided to make Orilla their new home planet due to its high concentration of neutronium. When the Human-Replicators escaped Halla, they came to Orilla seeking vengeance. However, they are stopped by Aegir and O’Neill’s Ancients designed Replicator-disruptor gun (801/802 – New Order). It is located in the IdaGalaxy. The Asgard gather there to enact their mass suicide due to their incurable degeneration disease by blowing up the planet (1020 – Unending).

The Hippaforalkus, renamed Orion

Orion

Myth ~ ANCIENT GREECE ~ (Also known as: Candaon) He was a handsome giant who was the son of Poseidon (God of the Sea) and Euryale (an Amazon Queen and mighty huntress; there was also another Euryale ("Far-Roaming"), who was a Gorgon). He possessed the power to walk on the surface of the sea (a gift from his father) and a mighty hunter. He was in love with Merope, the daughter of King Oenopion of Chios. To try to win her hand in marriage, he cleared Chios of wild beasts. However, Oenopion rejected Orion’s proposal of marriage. Oenopion got Orion drunk, blinded him, and left him on the seashore. Orion wandered around until he bumped into Hephaestus, who gave him a seeing-eye-boy. They eventually made their way to the East where they met Helios, who restored his sight. He them became smitten with Artemis and they were to be married. However, Artemis killed him (in a variety of ways according to a variety of versions). Learn More: Chris Dolan’s Orion.
The Show (Stargate Atlåntis) ~ (See: Daedalus) Named after an Ancient general, the Hippaforalkus was renamed Orion by Col. Sheppard. It was found under an Ancient installation on the planet Taranis. It was most likely damaged by the Wraith. McKay was able to repair the hyperdrive and shields long enough to escape the eruption of the super-volcano and save the rest to the Taranians. Chancellor Lycus allows Atlantis usage of the Orion in exchange for helping his people relocate to a new planet (219 – Inferno). SGA has the Orion repaired within a month and use it to defend Atlantis against Michael’s hive ship (220 – Allies).

The planet Erebus Teal’c overcame his doubts

Orpheus

Myth ~ ANCIENT GREECE ~ (From orphao "to be deprived, to long for" or orphe "darkness") He was a hero of Greek mythology; appearing in Metamorphoses by Ovid (X, 1-105 and XI, 1-66), Bibliotheke by Apollodorus (I, iii, 2; ix, 16 & 25), and Argonautica by Apollonius Rhodius (I, 23- 34; IV, 891-909). As the son of Calliope (the patron Muse of Epic Poetry) and Oeagrus, a king of Thrace, Orpheus possessed superhuman musical and poetic skills. Some stories say his father was Apollo; and that Apollo gave Orpheus his first lyre (a musical instrument similar to a harp). As an Argonaut, his music saved the crew from the Sirens. He is perhaps most well known for the myth concerning his wife, Eurydice. After he returned from the adventure with the Argonauts, he married Eurydice, whom he was madly in love with. One day, while they were walking in a field, a snake fatally bit her. Orpheus, overcome by grief, went down to the Underworld to convince Hades (God of the Underworld) to release her. Orpheus’ songs of grief were so beautiful and moving that Hades agreed to let Eurydice return to the land of the living; however, there was one condition. Orpheus would lead Eurydice back to the surface, but he was not allowed to look back. When Orpheus reached the opening to the surface world, he turned back to tell Eurydice, thus she disappeared back into the underworld. At this loss, Orpheus went into mourning and self-imposed social exile. One day, a group of Maenads (female devotees of Dionysus) found him. Dionysus (God of Wine and Ecstasy) encouraged them to attack him because he worshiped Apollo. They pelted him with branches and rocks. However, the branches and rocks refused to strike him because his music was so beautiful. The Maenads were enraged and killed him with their bare hands, tearing him to pieces. His head and lyre floated to the island of Lesbos, where his oracle was established.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ The story of Orpheus is one of rebirth, albeit a failure. He descends into the darkness of the underworld in an attempt to retrieve his dead wife. This episode deals with the rebirth of Teal’c and Daniel. It centers on Teal’c learning to deal with the loss of his symbiote, the use of Tretonin, and coming to terms with being a "weaker" warrior (see Kek). The secondary story line deals with Daniel coming to terms with being a corporeal human again, rather than being among the Ascended. Daniel must also come to terms with his repressed memories. Both Daniel and Teal’c emerge from their own “darkness” and realize that they have overcome and truly belong (Also see Erebus) (704 – Orpheus).

Oshu, loyal First Prime of Yu

Oshu

Geography ~ JAPAN ~ Oshu is an ancient name for an area in northeastern Japan (Oshu is also Europe). Oshu (or Oushu) is another name of Mutsu (or Michinoku, literally "Obscure Recesses of the Land"). The ou of Oushu and tsu of Mutsu are the same alphabetical character, which is defined as a deep or hidden part of something. Ancient Oshu encompasses the modern prefectures of Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima, in the Tohoku region (on Honshū, the largest and main island). Oshu/Mutsu was known as an "old province" during the early eighth century. Then, after the Meiji Restoration (1868), it was divided into five areas: Mutsu, Rikuchu, Rikuzen, Iwaki, and Iwashiro. Oshu/Mutsu was ruled by four generations of the Fujiwara family (or Fujiwara-shi [shi="clan"]) for approximately 100 years between the end of the 11th and 12th centuries. The first reigning member of the family was Kiyohara Fujiwara. Their base was Hiraizumi (nicknamed "The Golden City"). The Fujiwara family used their economic strength and political abilities to create a high culture that surpassed that of the capital in Kyoto. The main road to northern Japan is named after Oshu/Mutsu; the Oshu Kaido. The road crosses Asakusa-bashi (an area in Tokyo) and runs along the Sumida River to the river’s main ferry. Learn about one of the samurai employed by the Fujiwara-shi: Minamoto Yoshitsune.
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ He is the first prime of Yu. Even though he know that Yu is becoming more and more senile, he still remains loyal, and often takes charge of Yu’s armies. Instead of taking the fleet to the planet of Vis Uban to attack Anubis, Yu orders him to take the fleet to Chodawa. Oshu starts to catch on to the idea that Yu is not immortal and will eventually die. He takes control of Yu’s forces and fleet and continues in his master’s name. However, he surrenders the fleet to Baal in order to destroy Anubis (701/702 – Fallen/Homecoming). Presumably killed by the RepliCarter (816/817 – Reckoning).

Osiris seemed to be saddened at the news of Daniel’s death. Is she loosing control over Sarah?

Osiris

Myth ~ ANCIENT EGYPT ~ His Egyptian name is either Asar or Usar and translates as either "He Sees the Throne" or "The Strength of the Eye" (Osiris is the Greek version). There are at least 158 versions of Osiris’ name. The first son of Geb and Nut, he is also brother/husband of Isis, and brother to Heru-ur, Seth, and Nephthys. With Isis, he is the father of Horus the Younger, and with Nephthys he is the father of Anubis. He is the God of the Underworld (because he was the first person to die), Resurrection, the Cycle of Vegetation, and the Harvest. He was the first Pharaoh and brought civilization to Egypt. His brother, Seth, murdered him at Abydos so he could become the king. Thus, Horus vowed revenge on Seth. Isis, with the help of Anubis and Thoth, restored Osiris to life through mummification. Osiris then went to the underworld to judge the souls of the dead (See Weighing of the Hearts).
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ Osiris and Isis were "Banished to Oblivion" by the System Lord Seth. Osiris’ and Isis’ symbiotes were placed in Canopic Jars. Osiris took Sarah Gardner, an old friend of Daniel’s, as a host, and then escaped in a Goa’uld ship hidden in Egypt (413 – The Curse). Zipacna reveals that Osiris shared equal power with Isis. Osiris is sent by Zipacna to represent Anubis at the summit (515 – Summit). She goes to Yu’s chamber to confront Daniel, however he uses the Reol’s neurotoxin and convinces her he is Jarrin. Osiris also asks for official recognition (which she receives) at the summit and reveals to the other System Lords that she represents Anubis. She tells Yu that if he votes in favor of Anubis, that Anubis will destroy Earth. She stabs Yu when she thinks he is going to double-cross the rest of the System Lords, as a result of her recognizing Daniel (516 – Last Stand). She is working for Anubis. She destroys Thor’s ship and locates Heimdall’s lab. After capturing the lab, she also momentarily captures Maj. Carter, who tells her that Daniel had died (See Oma Desala) (522 – Revelations). Anubis’ plan to use Daniel to translate the Ancients’ map to a "place of great power" backfired (See Chimera). Osiris was captured and removed from Sarah. Sarah recovered; Osiris’ fate unknown (715 – Chimera).

Holographic Cross-Dresser

Osric

History/Literature ~ GREAT BRITAIN ~ (Old English, "God's rule") There were at least four famous Anglo-Saxon kings named Osric. There was Osric of Deira (c. 632–634), Osric of the Hwicce (c. 675- 685), Osric of Northumbria (c. 718-729), and Osric of Sussex (c. 915?). In Shakespeare’s Hamlet (Act V, scene ii), Osric is the superficial and frivolous courtier who tells Hamlet that his father, King Claudius, has called for a fencing duel between Hamlet and Laertes.
